Reflection on CSW68

ree

Attending the UN CSW68 and the NGO-CSW68 Forum was a transformative experience filled with powerful moments that deeply impacted me. Throughout the conference, I encountered individuals and discussions that reshaped my perspectives and reinforced my commitment to advocating for women’s rights. One of the most significant encounters was with Valerie, an activist against Female Genital Mutilation (FGM).

She guided me on my first day and provided invaluable insights. Together, we are now planning a workshop on FGM at my university, aiming to raise awareness and foster dialogue on this critical issue.

Another profound experience was a debate on the reproductive healthcare of Indigenous women in Canada and a session with Catholics for Choice. These discussions altered the way I approach conversations about abortion, encouraging more open and nuanced dialogue. Many personal stories shared at CSW68 evoked a mix of frustration, anger, and motivation, further fueling my dedication to women’s rights. The blend of intellectual debates, political discourse, and personal narratives provided a holistic and eye-opening experience that has contributed to my personal and professional growth.

Moving forward, I am eager to leverage my experiences from CSW68 to contribute to a more peaceful and equitable world. I aim to assist in organizing future CSW events and support newcomers in navigating the conference. Additionally, I have been representing my insights at the UN Women Austria Meeting and will continue my advocacy at an upcoming NGO meeting in Vienna. I also plan to share my learnings through presentations and discussions, ensuring that the knowledge gained at CSW68 reaches a wider audience.

One challenge was the limited opportunity to deeply connect with other attendees. While we shared meals and workshops, these settings were not always conducive to meaningful discussions. A dedicated gathering with introductions and interactive activities would enhance connections. Additionally, youth-focused meetings during or after the event could provide structured support and reflection time.

Overall, CSW68 has been an incredible journey of learning, networking, and growth. I look forward to applying my newfound knowledge and continuing my advocacy efforts for gender equality and human rights.
